Themes VII, Rashad’s 3rd most streamed song, is a piece which contains the use of multilayering tracks which gradually progresses from what just seems like call and response of a percussion instrument as well as the use of modular synthesis. It then moves includes some brassy instruments to it as well, which play legato notes over the constant call and response from the initial point of the song. The song does not have a set tempo, as it uses more of a chaotic rhythm instead. In terms of the key, it is also unknown, as it has quite randomised one shots being used in this peace, which doesn’t seem to fit to any particular scale. This randomised probably created by the randomness of the LFO’s used in the patching of the module parameters, creating a syncopated off beat rhythm. Becker is known for his interesting sound design, uses layering and dissolving into endless variations. The timbre of the piece uses distortion and other processing techniques.
Becker also uses microtonal tuning which adds to the melancholic and eerie ambience of the song. This creates unease and tension by how it introduces the sense of instability and unresolvement as it doesn’t follow pitches of the scale. The out of tune sound causes us to feel uneasy because of how it deviates from western ideology, which is what were used to as the norm to what music should sound like, and what’s pleasing for us to here.
